The Corner

A family living in a Baltimore ghetto struggle for normalcy in a place surrounded by illicit drugs and behaviour.
Genre: Feature Film Urban Drama
Rating: UN
Release Date: 22-JUL-2003
Media Type: DVD

The bleak reality of drug addiction is captured with unflinching authenticity in The Corner, an excellent, reality-based HBO miniseries. Having lived on the streets of West Baltimore, Maryland, where this compelling drama takes place, actor-director Charles S. Dutton knows the territory, physically, socially, and emotionally, and his compassionate approach is vital to the series' success. Dutton cares for his characters deeply enough to give them a realistic shred of hope, even when hope is consistently dashed by the ravages of addiction. This is, at its root, a family tragedy, focusing on errant father Gary (T.K. Carter, in a heartbreaking performance) a once-successful investor trapped in a tailspin of heroin dependency. His estranged wife Fran (Khandi Alexander) was the first to get hooked, and she's struggling to get clean, while their 15-year-old son DeAndre (Sean Nelson, from the indie hit Fresh) deals drugs, temporarily avoiding their deadly allure while facing the challenge of premature fatherhood.
Through revealing flashbacks and numerous local characters, we see the explicit fallout of addiction, and while violence occasionally erupts, its constant threat is secondary to Dutton's dramatic vision, which remains steadfastly alert to the humanity and neglected potential of these lost and searching souls. The Corner is, essentially, the civilian flipside of HBO's equally laudable series The Wire, which approaches a similar neighborhood from a police-squad perspective. Performances are uniformly superb, details are uncannily perfect, and for all of its human horror, The Corner is riveting, not depressing. A closing interview with the characters' real-life counterparts bears witness to the fact that these lives--with inevitable exceptions--need not be lost forever. --Jeff Shannon

I didn't like riding behind him (but the curves meant that sometimes I forgot to leave proper space in front of me), and this time he almost didn't get away with it. I think he forgot he had panniers on.

Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex

Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex

The candid, poignant, unforgettable writing of the young girl whose own life story has become an everlasting source of courage and inspiration.

Hiding from the Nazis in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building in Amsterdam, a thirteen-year-old girl named Anne Frank became a writer. The now famous diary of her private life and thoughts reveals only part of Anne’s story, however. This book rounds out the portrait of this remarkable and talented young author.

Newly translated, complete, and restored to the original order in which Anne herself wrote them in her notebook, Tales from the Secret Annex is a collection of Anne Frank’s lesser-known writings: short stories, fables, personal reminiscences, and an unfinished novel, Cady’s Life.

Annex - expanded Dunwoody?

Annex - expanded Dunwoody?

If the idea gets support, Dunwoody’s border could head southward.

Rep. Mike Jacobs said he may introduce a bill that could pave the way for Dunwoody to annex an area known as North Brookhaven, just south of 285.

Jacobs, who lives in that area, says he has been getting a stronger and stronger message from residents that they want more local control of their community.

“I think it is fair to say that there is a growing interest in some type of incorporation into a city in the neighborhoods south of 285, around Murphey Candler Park and even around Silver Lake,” he said. “Whether Dunwoody is a willing dance partner for annexation is an open question right now.”

If annexation is on the table, it would have to get backing from Dunwoody city officials and residents, as well as residents south of 285, he said.

“The reality is the area that would be annexed includes some important assets,” he said, listing Candler and its ballfields, the section of Perimeter Center south of 285 and Blackburn Park. “It’s an attractive area.”

Jacobs has discussed the possibility with Dunwoody city officials.

“There have been very preliminary discussions, with no specific plans on the table,” he said.

Though the idea has been brought up before, Dunwoody Councilmen Robert Wittenstein and John Heneghan said it was the first time they’d heard anything concrete about a possible annexation bid.

“I think that most of us would be very supportive of at least looking at the idea,” said Wittenstein said.

He said he’s not surprised that some residents of that area have been talking about annexation, as he thinks Dunwoody has done a good job of providing services at a low tax rate.

But, he said that taking on such facilities at Murphey Candler Park would bring on some financial questions for the city of Dunwoody, and such issues would have to be weighed in any decision.

Heneghan agreed.

“It’s something that needs to be studied and needs to be looked at,” he said.

He said that Murphey Candler is used by many Dunwoody residents already, and there are similarities between the communities.

He said there would be plenty of discussion ahead if the idea gets traction.

“That’s not a decision that’s going to happen overnight,” Heneghan said. “Do we the city want them to be part of Dunwoody and do they want to be part of us? It can’t be a one-sided decision. It’s got to be a win-win for everybody or it doesn’t work.”

The neighborhoods in question are the Murphey Candler Park and Silver Lake neighborhoods of unincorporated DeKalb County.

Annexing those neighborhoods into Dunwoody or allowing them to join other Brookhaven communities in an incorporation effort are two options Jacobs wants to put on the table.

“In terms of a new city altogether, the question there is whether there is interest as you get south of these neighborhoods,” he said.

The issue has been discussed before, but he said it seems to have picked up traction, especially with residents in the North Brookhaven area.

“Almost everyone is sounding favorable to it now,” he said. “It’s a remarkable change from just a couple of years ago.”

He’s hoping to start a public conversation about the area’s options within the next few months.

“I am committed to looking at the issue, particularly in light of how badly things are going in DeKalb County right now,” he said. “The county government is bloated in areas that are far flung from its core mission.”

He said that key services are being cut, while there are still many non-essential positions in the county government.

“That, in turn, changes basic things like response times, ability to maintain assets like Murphey Candler and Blackburn Park,” he said, “which is very likely to drive citizens into the arms of a city.”

Jacobs wouldn’t go into too much detail about the possible annexation legislation, but said it would create an avenue for annexation of that part of unincorporated DeKalb County into Dunwoody. He did say that because of Chamblee’s recent annexation, he doubts that city would be looking to make any new annexations in the next two to three years.

Jacobs said he is considering a broadly worded bill that would “take into account any kind of scenario that might come up.”

He said it would allow for citizens to easily move forward with annexation, if that is an option they support.

“There’s no scenario where an annexation would move forward without buy-in from the city that would be doing annexation and the citizens of the area that would be annexed,” he said.

Sonicare

Big thanks to everyone who got this on explore!!!!

Image of water being dropped onto a vibrating sonicare toothbrush, shot at 1/8000 of a second. I needed the extremely high shutter speed due to the crazy fast vibrations of this thing. I tried this shot with milk (looked kinda odd) as well as dish soap (didn't splatter), but I think I like this one the best. I taped the toothbrush to a cheap tripod and when turned on the whole tripod vibrated like heck. Hope my downstairs neighbors don't hate me =]

Setup: The only way to get the high shutter speed was to use a flash in high speed mode, so I used an OC-E3 off camera cord as it was the only thing that would work for this setup. Flash was about 45 degrees to the left, and I used some white paper on the right to bounce the fill. Red poster board was placed behind the toothbrush.

Gear: 580exII, Canon 50D, 100mm macro lens, Tripod for camera, second tripod with toothbrush taped to it, shutter release cable, toothbrush, water, posterboard, paper

Homemade Digital Shutter release

Homemade Digital Shutter release

I spent way too much time messing with this thing today but it works like a
champ!. With about $30, I was able to build the homemade shutter release
with a 40' extension. I built it modular so that I had a short version to
use right off of the camera or to add the 37' extension to it to get some
distance. I have a bird feeder on my deck that I get a lot of visitors
(when I remember to put food out) I wanted to be able to tripod mount my
EOS and run the long cable through the living room window so that I could
fire some really close shots of the bird friends. See the next shot that
was taken using this setup (no birds before it got dark)

The Stables Tolson Museum Ravensknowle Hall Huddersfield Yorkshire

The Stables Tolson Museum Ravensknowle Hall Huddersfield Yorkshire

For almost 140 years, a group of parcels of land in Dalton have made up a small estate part of which is now Ravensknowle Park. Set in the middle of this estate stands Tolson Museum, formerly called Ravensknowle Hall, a mansion built about 1860 by John Beaumont, a woollen manufacturer.

Among the middle class, family ties were important in both business and social life and from 1827 to 1919, the estate (apart from one brief period), remained within the same family, passing from uncle to nephew, from father to daughter and from cousin to cousin. However, the casualties and the social upheaval caused by the First World War disrupted middle class life and in 1919, Legh Tolson made a gift of the hall and part of the grounds to what was then Huddersfield Corporation, as a memorial to his nephews Robert Huntriss Tolson and James Martin Tolson, who were both killed during the fighting.

'The Tolson Memorial' was to become a museum organised according to the scheme worked out by Dr T W Woodhead of Huddersfield Technical College, and under his guidance, it became one of the country's leading local museums, systematically organised according to a progression of subjects. It was also an institution with educational responsibilities, and much use was made of models, full size casts and removable display units which could be used with visiting parties.

The subsequent years have seen many alterations to the permanent displays and the museum now houses permanent galleries on subjects ranging from Transport, Textiles, Archaeology and the Huddersfield area.

Top 7 Pitfalls of Doing Business in China

Managing international supply chains requires good strategy derived from; a basic knowledge of international business, a sixth sense that will sound the alarm when things aren’t quite right, and follow up that would make a micromanager with OCD look negligent.

It seems so simple: Here’s the order and the money, go make the stuff and ship it to the United States.

How could things go wrong?

Well things do go south. A lot.

Here are the seven most common pitfalls in the China-US supply chain.

1. Due diligence was not done and the supplier is not a quality operation. This goes back to the genesis of the search for a manufacturer in China. A bad pick was made because there was no knowledge to make a better choice.

2. Product specifications were not specific enough or were not put fully in writing. The manufacturer either made a decision for you to keep the factory moving or used cheap inputs* because raw material quality was not specified.
*inputs are all the things that go into making your product, such as raw materials like cloth or plastics.

3. Failure to foster a strong relationship with the right people. If the only person you know is a low ranking Customer Service Rep, you have a problem. Guanxi, a person’s connections and relationships in China, is a currency all its own. Zero guanxi translates into zero leverage.

4. Too much trust and not enough follow-up. Just because everyone agrees on what should be done does not mean it is going to happen. Don’t believe what you’re told, find out if it’s true. Did production really start on the 10th? Trust but verify.

5. The supplier is hiding problems. Maybe they are struggling with a labor shortage or there were raw material delays or other issues that are being quietly swept under the rug. You won’t know until a key deadline has passed or defective goods have been received.

6. Failing to understand international transportation logistics and import requirements. What are the Incoterms? Do you have a forwarder? An import bond? What is the harmonization code of your product and what is the tariff rate? Should you ship by ocean or air? Does your supplier have an export license? Can’t answer these question? Don’t know what some of these words mean? Then stay out of China until you do.

7. Giving up too much power. Prepaying orders in full or not using third party inspection removes the ability to motivate results.

In less than 20 pages, you will be well on your way to avoiding all the potential pitfalls listed above. You will know who you need to contact, what a scam looks like, and how to verify a manufacturer's capabilities.

Welcome to the syllabus for your learning curve.

So a little context to this. Like many new borns Alex had Jaundice. He wasn't getting rid of those extra red blood cells by himself quick enough so he needed some UV light. I contemplated not even taking this photo but the UV light looked really cool over Alex and my wife didn't mind.
